Crab Monsters

I wanted to get back into doing small one off illustrations. It is something I hadn’t really done in a while due to the planning that is usually involved and multiple iterations in my concept designs and work on visual development. I made this first image as a goofy little story. A baby kaiju type character looming over an unsuspecting lifeguard on a deserted beach.

The final image.

The final image.

Then the concept artist kicked in. I thought, “how can I expand on this little guy in 3d and use it to make a more advanced image? I hopped into 3d coat for a quick voxel sculpt of the basic shapes and colors, and then over to Cinema 4d for a quick render.

After that I brought it into Photoshop for a paint over. Overall, I think I probably didn’t save much time with this method due to the fact that I painted over the render a bit too much. It was, however, a good exercise in knowing when to stop prepping and start the finished image. I think there is something that I can get from this workflow, I just need to calibrate a bit more and find a good balance.

Plague Doctor

A current character design I’m working on. The idea is a scientist working with a parasitic species of insect. He ingests the egg via the applicator into the gas mask and becomes the host for the creature. Not logical, but fun to draw. Stay tuned for more of this guy.

I also wanted to play around with Marmoset for a bit so I decided to throw together a rough sculpt in 3d coat to create some mood thumbs. Green always makes me think toxic.
